What to do after applying for a grant
The weeks between submission and decision matter more than most applicants think.
Confirm and record
Save the confirmation email, application ID and a copy of everything you submitted. Note the funder's stated decision date in your calendar.
Don't pester, but do respond fast
If the funder asks a clarifying question, answer within a day or two — slow responses read as disorganization. Otherwise, wait for the decision date rather than emailing for updates.
If you're funded
Read the award letter's conditions before spending anything: reporting requirements, spending deadlines, acknowledgment rules. Thank the funder promptly, and diarize every report date — good reporting is what gets you funded again.
If you're declined
Ask for feedback if the funder offers it; many will tell you why. Most programs run annually, and a declined application with feedback is a head start on next year's. Save the program and turn on a reopen alert.
