Common grant application mistakes
The avoidable errors that sink otherwise good applications — and how to catch them.
Missing the eligibility gate
The most common rejection is applying at all when ineligible. Read the applicant, geography and school-type rules first.
A budget that doesn't add up
Arithmetic errors, rounded guesses and missing line items signal carelessness. Have a second person check the math and the total.
Writing about the money instead of the students
Reviewers fund outcomes. If your first paragraph is about what you'll buy rather than what students will gain, rewrite it.
Ignoring the funder's language
If the guidelines ask for specific sections, word limits or questions, follow them exactly. Exceeding a word limit or skipping a required question is an easy reject.
Submitting at the deadline
Portals crash, files fail to upload, approvers are out sick. Aim to submit at least 48 hours early.
