Question 1

What makes a grant application successful?

Accepted Answer

Successful applications show a clear fit with the funder's priorities, a specific need supported by evidence, a realistic plan, a reasonable budget and a way to measure results. Reviewers want to understand quickly what you will do, for whom, by when and how you will know it worked. Follow every formatting instruction and answer the questions asked, in order. Avoid jargon and vague claims. The AI Grant Writer can help draft and structure sections from your project details, which you should then review and personalize.

Question 2

How do I write a strong statement of need?

Accepted Answer

Describe the specific problem your students face, show evidence, and connect it directly to your project. Use local data where you can — assessment results, participation numbers, survey responses or enrollment figures — and cite the source. Explain why the need is not already met and what will happen if it is not addressed. Keep the focus on students rather than on the school's general finances. A short, concrete need statement is more persuasive than a long general one.

Question 3

How detailed should my grant budget be?

Accepted Answer

Detailed enough that a reviewer can see what each dollar buys and why it is needed. List items with quantities and unit costs, separate categories such as supplies, equipment, personnel and travel, and include any match or other funding. Make sure every item connects to an activity in your narrative and that totals match the amount requested. Check what the funder will not pay for — many exclude food, gifts or indirect costs. The Budget Builder helps you lay out and total line items.

Question 4

How do I show how my project will be evaluated?

Accepted Answer

Name two or three measurable outcomes and how you will collect evidence for each. For example: the percentage of participating students reaching a reading benchmark, attendance at an after-school program, or pre- and post-survey results. State who will collect the data and when. Funders of small grants do not expect formal research designs, but they do want a credible way to know whether the project worked and what students gained.

Question 5

How far in advance should I start a grant application?

Accepted Answer

Allow at least four to six weeks for a small foundation grant and two to three months for a larger or federal application. You will need time to confirm eligibility, gather data, get approvals, collect partner letters, obtain price quotes and have someone review the draft. Federal applications also require registrations that can take weeks. Saving listings to My Funding helps you keep track of upcoming deadlines.

Question 6

What registrations are needed to apply for federal grants?

Accepted Answer

Organizations applying directly for federal grants generally need an active registration in SAM.gov, which issues a Unique Entity ID, and an account on Grants.gov or the agency's own application system. Registration and renewal can take several weeks, so start early. Most schools receive federal education funds through their state and district rather than applying directly, so check with your district grants office first. Agency program pages describe exact requirements for each competition; see our federal funding profiles.

Question 7

Do I need letters of support?

Accepted Answer

Only if the funder asks for them or the project depends on partners. When required, letters should be specific: who the partner is, what they will contribute, and why they support the project. Generic praise is less useful than a clear commitment of time, space or resources. Ask partners at least two weeks in advance and offer a short summary of the project so their letter matches your application.

Question 8

What should I do if my grant application is rejected?

Accepted Answer

Ask the funder for feedback if they offer it, and note any reviewer comments. Many successful grant writers are turned down several times before winning. Common reasons include weak fit with the funder's priorities, unclear outcomes or budget problems. Revise and reuse the strongest sections, look for programs that fit your project more closely, and reapply in the next cycle if the funder allows it. Keeping a library of your best answers saves time later.

Question 9

What happens after I receive a grant?

Accepted Answer

Expect an award letter or agreement describing how the money may be used, the project period and reporting requirements. Read it carefully before accepting. Spend funds only on approved items, keep receipts and records, and note any reporting dates. Many funders ask for a short final report with outcomes, photos or student work. Thanking the funder and reporting on time builds a relationship that helps future applications.

Question 10

Can I use AI to help write grant applications?

Accepted Answer

AI tools can help you organize ideas, draft sections and edit for clarity, but you remain responsible for accuracy. Check every fact, figure and claim, add your own local detail and voice, and follow any funder rules about AI-generated content. Never let a tool invent data, partners or outcomes. The AI Grant Writer drafts from the project details you provide and is designed to be edited, not submitted as is.

Question 11

Can I reuse the same application for different funders?

Accepted Answer

You can reuse core material — your school description, need statement, project plan and budget — but each application should be tailored. Funders have different priorities, questions and word limits, and reviewers notice generic submissions. Adjust the emphasis to match each funder's goals and answer their questions directly. Saving your project details in Projects lets you start each application from the same accurate information.

Question 12

Is it safe to submit right before the deadline?

Accepted Answer

It is risky. Online portals can slow down near deadlines, uploads can fail, and some systems require final validation that takes time. Federal systems in particular may reject submissions with registration or formatting errors. Aim to submit at least two or three days early and keep a confirmation email or screenshot. Also confirm the time zone of the deadline, which is often stated in Eastern Time.

Question 13

Do I need 501(c)(3) status to apply for grants?

Accepted Answer

Not always. Many foundations can only make grants to tax-exempt charities or to government entities, and public schools and districts generally qualify as government units even though they are not 501(c)(3) organizations. Funders usually accept a school or district tax identification letter instead. Some programs require a 501(c)(3), in which case a parent-teacher organization with its own exempt status or a school foundation can apply. Always read the applicant requirements, and ask the funder if you are unsure which entity should apply.

Question 14

What does "Title I school" mean for grant eligibility?

Accepted Answer

A Title I school receives federal funds under Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which supports schools with high percentages of children from low-income families. Some private grants give priority to, or are restricted to, Title I schools as a way of targeting need. Your district or school office can confirm whether your school currently receives Title I funds and whether it operates a schoolwide or targeted program. If a grant requires Title I status, you may be asked for documentation from the district.

Question 15

Can private and charter schools apply for grants?

Accepted Answer

Often, but it depends on the program. Charter schools are public schools and are usually eligible wherever public schools are. Private and religious schools are eligible for many foundation and corporate grants, but some programs restrict awards to public schools. Under federal law, private school students and teachers may receive equitable services from certain federal programs through the local district rather than applying directly. Check each listing's applicant types; on K-12 Funding, eligibility is recorded from the funder's official guidelines.

Question 16

Why am I not eligible for a grant listed as national?

Accepted Answer

"National" means the program is not limited to one state, but other conditions may still apply. Common restrictions include school type, grade level, Title I status, enrollment size, the applicant's role, or proximity to a company's offices or facilities. Some corporate programs list national scope but fund only communities where they operate. Read the full eligibility section and the funder's official guidelines before you start an application. The Eligibility Checker can help you compare your situation with a listing's requirements.

Question 17

Are homeschool families eligible for K-12 grants?

Accepted Answer

Rarely for school grants, since most programs require an accredited school, district or nonprofit applicant. Some scholarships, contests and student awards do accept homeschooled students, and a few programs support homeschool cooperatives that are organized as nonprofits. Check the applicant types and student eligibility on each listing, and look specifically at scholarship and student award programs. If a program is unclear, contact the funder directly before applying.

Question 18

What are matching funds and do all grants require them?

Accepted Answer

A matching requirement means you must contribute a share of the project cost — for example, one dollar for every dollar awarded — from other sources. Some matches can be met with in-kind contributions such as staff time, volunteer hours or donated materials, while others require cash. Many small foundation and corporate grants require no match, but federal and larger grants more often do. Listings on K-12 Funding note when a match is required. Confirm the exact rules in the official guidelines before budgeting.

Question 19

Do I need district approval to apply for a grant?

Accepted Answer

Often yes, especially if the grant is paid to the school, involves student data, adds equipment to school property or requires ongoing commitments. Many districts have a grants office or a policy requiring sign-off before submission, and some funders require a principal or superintendent signature. Even when not required, getting approval early avoids problems at award time, such as funds that cannot be accepted. Check your district policy before you begin drafting.

Question 20

How can I quickly tell whether I meet a grant's eligibility rules?

Accepted Answer

Check five things first: who can apply (teacher, school, district, nonprofit or student), where applicants must be located, which grade levels or school types are covered, what the money may be used for, and whether a match or partnership is required. If any one of these does not fit, move on. Each K-12 Funding listing summarizes these points from the official source, and the Eligibility Checker walks you through them for a specific opportunity.

Question 21

Can a school apply jointly with a nonprofit partner?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and some grants require it. A common arrangement is for a nonprofit — such as a museum, library, youth organization or education foundation — to be the lead applicant, with the school as a partner delivering the program. This can open up foundation grants that require 501(c)(3) applicants. Put the arrangement in writing, clarify who manages the money and reporting, and include partner letters of support in the application.

Question 22

What if a funder's eligibility rules are unclear?

Accepted Answer

Contact the funder before applying. Most foundations and companies list a program contact or general inquiry address, and a short, specific question — for example, "Are public school districts eligible applicants?" — usually gets a clear answer. Keep a record of the response. On K-12 Funding, where a program's published eligibility is ambiguous we leave the detail unstated rather than guess; see how we verify funding for details.

Question 23

Where can I find grants for my school?

Accepted Answer

Start with three kinds of sources: federal and state education agencies, private and community foundations, and corporate giving programs. Federal money usually reaches schools through your state education agency and district, while foundations and companies often accept applications directly from schools or teachers. A directory such as the K-12 Funding homepage lets you filter verified opportunities by role, category, state and deadline in one place. It also helps to check your local community foundation, your state education department's grants page and the giving pages of large employers in your area, because many of the most winnable grants are local.

Question 24

Are there grants that individual teachers can apply for?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many foundations, professional associations and companies offer grants that a classroom teacher can apply for without going through the district, typically for classroom materials, projects or professional learning. Awards are often modest — a few hundred to a few thousand dollars — but applications are usually shorter. Check whether the program requires principal approval or payment to the school rather than to you personally, as many do. See grants for teachers for current listings, and use the role filter on the homepage set to Teacher to narrow results.

Question 25

How do I find STEM grants for my classroom or school?

Accepted Answer

STEM funding comes from science and engineering foundations, technology and manufacturing companies, professional societies and some federal agencies. Look for programs that match your specific activity — robotics, coding, environmental science or engineering design — because funders rarely fund "STEM" in general. Filter the homepage by the STEM category, then refine by your role and state. Corporate programs are often tied to communities where the company operates, so check eligibility geography carefully. The AI Grant Advisor can also match a short description of your project to relevant listings.

Question 26

Are there grants specifically for rural schools?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The federal Rural Education Achievement Program (REAP) provides formula funds to eligible rural districts through two strands, the Small, Rural School Achievement program and the Rural and Low-Income School program; eligibility is determined from federal locale and enrollment data rather than an open competition. Beyond REAP, a number of foundations and agricultural or utility companies prioritize rural communities. When searching, use the Rural education category and your state filter, and read eligibility closely — "rural" is defined differently by different funders. Your district office can confirm whether you already receive REAP funds.

Question 27

Where can I find funding for a school garden?

Accepted Answer

School garden grants usually come from gardening and nutrition organizations, environmental foundations, garden-supply and grocery companies, and local community foundations. Typical awards cover seeds, raised beds, tools, irrigation and curriculum materials, and some programs provide supplies instead of cash. Funders often want to see how the garden connects to learning, who will maintain it over the summer, and how students participate. Describe your garden to the AI Grant Advisor to see matching listings, and check your local extension office and Farm to School programs for additional support.

Question 28

How can I find funding for teacher professional development?

Accepted Answer

Professional development can be funded from several places: federal Title II, Part A funds managed by your district, professional association grants and fellowships, foundation programs, and some corporate grants. Many of these cover conference registration, travel, courses or summer institutes. Ask your district which Title II funds are available before applying elsewhere, since that money is designated for educator development. For outside funding, see professional development funding and use the Funding Finder to match what you need to pay for.

Question 29

When are most school grant deadlines?

Accepted Answer

There is no single grant season. Many foundation and corporate programs open in late summer or autumn for awards the following spring, while federal competitions follow agency schedules that can shift each year. Some programs accept applications on a rolling basis. Because deadlines vary, it is more reliable to track specific programs than to wait for a "season". The deadlines this month page shows verified upcoming closing dates, and you can save listings to My Funding to keep track of the ones you plan to apply for.

Question 30

Can I get grants for classroom technology like laptops or tablets?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but technology-only requests are competitive and some funders exclude hardware. Funders are more receptive when devices are part of a clear learning project — for example, tablets for a reading intervention or laptops for a coding course — with a plan for training, maintenance and measuring impact. Check each program's allowed uses before applying. Technology companies, telecom providers and education foundations are common sources. For internet access and connections, the federal E-Rate program discounts eligible services for schools and libraries through a separate application process.

Question 31

Should I look for local or national grants first?

Accepted Answer

Local first is usually the better bet. Community foundations, local businesses, civic clubs and regional utilities receive far fewer applications than national programs and often prefer to fund schools in their own area. National programs offer larger or more visible awards but attract many more applicants. A practical approach is to build a short list that combines one or two local sources with one or two national programs that closely fit your project. Use the state filter on the homepage and check your state page for state-specific opportunities.

Question 32

Are there grants for special education programs?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Federal IDEA funds flow to districts by formula for special education services, so ask your district's special education office what is already available. For specific projects — sensory rooms, assistive technology, inclusive playgrounds or staff training — look at disability-focused foundations, family foundations and some corporate programs. Strong applications explain the students served, how the resource supports their individual needs, and how the school will sustain it. Filter the homepage by Special education to see current listings.

Question 33

Can schools get grants for student mental health and wellbeing?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Federal programs administered by the Department of Education and other agencies have supported school-based mental health services, and many health foundations and hospital systems fund counseling, social-emotional learning and wellness initiatives. Availability of federal competitions changes from year to year, so verify the current status on the agency's official page. Foundations often prefer projects with trained staff, community partners and measurable outcomes. Use the Mental health category on the homepage to see verified opportunities.

Question 34

How many grants should I apply for at once?

Accepted Answer

Quality matters more than volume. Most small schools and individual teachers do well focusing on three to five well-matched programs per cycle, tailoring each application rather than sending the same text everywhere. Apply only where you clearly meet eligibility and where your project matches what the funder says it supports. Keep a simple tracker of deadlines, requirements and reporting obligations; saving listings to My Funding helps. If you receive more than one award for the same need, tell funders — most expect their money to be used as described.

Question 35

How can high school students find scholarships?

Accepted Answer

Start with local sources — school counselors, community foundations, civic clubs and local employers — because they receive fewer applicants. Then look at national scholarships based on academic achievement, community service, financial need, intended field of study or background. Filter the homepage by the Student role to see scholarship listings, and check eligibility for grade level, state and citizenship. Completing the FAFSA is also essential, since many colleges and states use it to award need-based aid.

Question 36

When should students start applying for scholarships?

Accepted Answer

Many scholarships are open to high school seniors, often with deadlines between the autumn of senior year and the following spring. Some programs accept juniors or even younger students, particularly contests and achievement awards. Starting a list in junior year gives time to gather recommendations, transcripts and essay drafts. Track deadlines carefully, since they vary widely.

Question 37

How can I avoid scholarship scams?

Accepted Answer

Legitimate scholarships do not require you to pay an application fee or buy anything to receive an award. Be cautious of offers that guarantee winnings, ask for bank or card details, pressure you to act quickly or claim you have won something you did not apply for. Verify the organization through its official website and ask your school counselor if unsure. The Federal Trade Commission publishes guidance on scholarship and financial aid scams.

Question 38

What makes a strong scholarship essay?

Accepted Answer

Answer the prompt directly, tell a specific story and show what you learned or how you grew. Concrete detail is more memorable than general statements about hard work. Connect your experience to the scholarship's purpose, whether that is leadership, service or a field of study. Keep within the word limit, proofread carefully and ask a teacher or counselor to read a draft. Write your own essay; reviewers look for an authentic voice.

Question 39

Are there scholarships based on financial need?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many scholarships consider financial need, sometimes alongside academic achievement or community involvement, and may ask for information from the FAFSA or a family income statement. Federal Pell Grants, which are need-based aid for undergraduates, are awarded through the FAFSA rather than a separate application. Use the Financial need option when browsing scholarships for students.

Question 40

Do scholarships affect other financial aid?

Accepted Answer

They can. Colleges must consider outside scholarships when calculating financial aid, and in some cases an outside award reduces loans or need-based grants in the aid package. Policies differ by college, so ask each financial aid office how outside scholarships are applied. Report scholarships to your college as required.

Question 41

Are there scholarships for students who want to become teachers?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Some states and organizations offer scholarships or service-based awards for future educators, especially in shortage areas such as special education, STEM and bilingual education. The federal TEACH Grant provides funds to eligible students who agree to teach in a high-need field at a low-income school for a set period; it converts to a loan if the service obligation is not met. Read the terms carefully before accepting service-based awards.

Question 42

Can teachers or schools help students apply for scholarships?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and their support matters. Teachers write recommendation letters, counselors share local opportunities and verify transcripts, and schools can host application workshops. Ask recommenders at least three weeks before the deadline and give them a short summary of your achievements and the scholarship's purpose. Schools can share K-12 Funding scholarship listings with students and families.

Question 43

What is the difference between federal and private grants?

Accepted Answer

Federal grants come from government agencies such as the U.S. Department of Education. They are often large, follow detailed rules and are usually distributed to states and districts by formula or through formal competitions. Private grants come from foundations and companies; they are typically smaller, more flexible and often open to schools, teachers or nonprofits applying directly. Many schools combine both. Explore federal funding and corporate and foundation funding to compare.

Question 44

What is the difference between formula and competitive grants?

Accepted Answer

Formula grants are allocated automatically according to a set calculation — for example, based on student enrollment or poverty counts — to every eligible state or district. Title I, Part A and IDEA are formula programs. Competitive (discretionary) grants are awarded to selected applicants after a review process. Most funding a teacher or single school can pursue directly is competitive. Your district manages formula funds, so ask how those are being used before seeking additional money.

Question 45

How do corporate foundations decide what to fund?

Accepted Answer

Corporate giving usually follows the company's business interests and communities. Priorities often include STEM, workforce readiness, financial literacy, health or the environment, and many programs focus on areas where the company has employees or facilities. Some give through an independent company foundation and others through direct corporate giving or employee programs. Read the funder's stated priorities and geography carefully. See corporate and foundation funding and funder profiles.

Question 46

What is a community foundation?

Accepted Answer

A community foundation is a public charity that pools donations from local individuals, families and businesses to support a specific city, county or region. Many run education grant programs or teacher mini-grants and manage donor-advised funds that also support schools. They are often among the most accessible funders for local schools because they focus on their own area. Search for the community foundation serving your county and check its grants calendar.

Question 47

What kinds of funding do state education agencies offer?

Accepted Answer

State education agencies distribute federal formula funds to districts and run their own competitive programs, which may cover areas such as literacy, career and technical education, school safety, early learning or innovation. Program names and availability vary widely between states and change with state budgets. Check your state education department's grants page regularly and see your state page for verified listings.

Question 48

What are in-kind grants?

Accepted Answer

In-kind grants provide goods or services instead of money — for example, books, seeds, software licenses, equipment or volunteer support. They can be easier to win and simpler to manage because there is no cash to account for. Check whether items arrive ready to use, what delivery and setup involve, and whether there are any ongoing costs, such as subscriptions after a free period.

Question 49

Is crowdfunding an alternative to grants for classrooms?

Accepted Answer

Crowdfunding platforms for teachers let you post a classroom project and receive donations from family, community members and sometimes corporate matching campaigns. It can work well for specific, modest requests such as books or supplies. Check your district's policy first, since some districts restrict or regulate crowdfunding. Crowdfunding complements rather than replaces grants, which can fund larger or longer-term projects.

Question 50

Where does funding for career and technical education come from?

Accepted Answer

The main federal source is the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, which provides formula funds to states, which then distribute them to eligible districts and colleges. Beyond Perkins, CTE programs are often supported by industry partners, trade associations, workforce boards and manufacturing or construction companies, sometimes through equipment donations. Use the CTE category on the homepage to find current opportunities.

Question 51

What is the difference between a grant, an award and a fellowship?

Accepted Answer

A grant funds a planned project or need. An award usually recognizes past achievement, such as an outstanding teacher or program, and may include unrestricted money. A fellowship typically supports an individual's learning or research over a period, such as a summer institute or year-long program, and may include a stipend. Requirements and reporting differ for each, so check what the funder expects before applying.

Question 52

Is federal pandemic relief (ESSER) funding still available?

Accepted Answer

No new ESSER funding is being awarded. The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds were one-time pandemic relief, and their obligation periods have ended, though some liquidation activity and extensions affected individual states. Schools that relied on ESSER for staff or programs are now seeking replacement funding from ongoing federal formula programs, state sources and private grants. Check with your district for its specific situation.

Question 53

Is K-12 Funding free to use?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Browsing, searching and reading all funding listings, funder profiles, guides and FAQs is free and does not require an account. A free account lets you save opportunities, track applications and use account-based tools such as the AI Grant Advisor and AI Grant Writer. See all available tools.

Question 54

How does K-12 Funding verify its listings?

Accepted Answer

Each listing is checked against the funder's own official information before it is published, including deadlines, amounts and eligibility. Monitored sources are re-scanned on a schedule, and changes go to a human review queue rather than being published automatically. Listings show when they were last verified, and passed deadlines are marked closed. Read the full methodology.

Question 55

Does K-12 Funding award grants itself?

Accepted Answer

No. K-12 Funding is a directory of funding opportunities offered by other organizations. We are not affiliated with the funders we list and do not review or award applications. Always apply through the funder's official website, which is linked from every listing.

Question 56

How does the AI Grant Advisor work?

Accepted Answer

You describe your project in your own words, and the AI Grant Advisor builds a structured profile — purpose, location, applicant type and amount — and ranks published listings by how well they fit, explaining why each match was chosen. It uses only the information in verified listings and asks follow-up questions to refine results. A free account is required before it processes your request.

Question 57

How do I save and track funding opportunities?

Accepted Answer

Create a free account, then use the save button on any listing. Saved opportunities appear in My Funding, where you can update the status as you plan, apply and hear back, and add notes. You can also follow funders to see their new open programs.

Question 58

How can I submit a funding opportunity?

Accepted Answer

Use the submit an opportunity form with the program name, organization, official website and any details you have. Every submission is checked against official sources before it is published, and some may not be added if they cannot be verified or do not serve K-12 education.

Question 59

What should I do if I find an error in a listing?

Accepted Answer

Let us know through the submission page with the listing name and the correct information, ideally with a link to the official source. We check corrections against the funder's own information before updating the listing. Always confirm details on the funder's website before applying.

Question 60

How often are new opportunities added?

Accepted Answer

New programs are added continuously as monitored funder pages change and submissions are verified. Monitoring runs on daily, weekly or monthly schedules depending on the source. Check the homepage regularly, and follow funders you are interested in so their new programs appear in My Funding.
