The challenge

C.O.R.E. @ the Camptonville Academy in Marysville, California serves 420 K-12 students through a personalized learning model combining homeschooling with classroom teaching. For seven years the school struggled with cramped facilities — teachers shared rooms and tutored in the parking lot.

The funding

Through its Community Facilities Loan and Grant Program, USDA Rural Development provided financial assistance to build and equip a 15,500 square foot Resource Learning Center.

What was delivered

The new center overlooking Ellis Lake gives students who learn at home — including those in the remote Yuba County foothills — access to specialized classes and one-on-one attention in subjects from math and science to 3D animation and robotics.

Lessons for other schools

Rural schools and charter schools serving dispersed students can use federal community facilities financing for permanent learning spaces, not just traditional district construction projects.
