How to get corporate sponsorship for your school

How to approach local businesses for sponsorship, in-kind gifts and matching — and keep them coming back.

Sponsorship is not a grant

Corporate foundation grants follow formal applications. Sponsorship is usually a direct relationship with a local business that supports an event, team or item in return for appropriate recognition. Check your district's policy on sponsorship and advertising first.

Start local and specific

Businesses whose employees or customers are your families are the most likely sponsors. Ask for something specific — 'sponsor the robotics team's competition fees of $600' — rather than general support.

Offer appropriate recognition

Thank-you listings in newsletters, a banner at an event or a certificate are common. Only offer what your district allows and what you can deliver.

Ask about matching and volunteer grants

Many employers match employee gifts or give grants when employees volunteer. Ask families to check with their employer.

Report back

Send photos (following student privacy rules) and a short note on what the sponsorship made possible. This is what makes renewal likely.
